About The Hymn Glory to His Name
“Glory to His Name” (also known as “Down At The Cross”) is a hymn composed by Elisha A. Hoffman in 1878. Elisha Albright (E. A.) Hoffman was the child of an Evangelical minister. Hoffman was raised to sing sacred hymns in churches and at the family home where his parents resided. After his high school education, Hoffman furthered his education at Union Seminary in New Berlin, Pennsylvania, and was appointed a Presbyterian minister in 1873.
Hoffman’s musical training was acquired through his parents. Despite having natural musical talent, Hoffman never attended a music school. Instead, Hoffman’s musical lessons were from his experience at his father’s church or his home. Apart from singing in church and at home, the Hoffman family had a regular family service, and hymn singing was an integral element. As a result, Hoffman also became extremely familiar with Evangelical hymnology’s spiritual and musical traditions from a young age. In these moments in family devotional services, Hoffman began to develop a fascination with sacred music and believed that singing is “as natural a function of the soul as breathing was a function of the body.”
After his seminary studies, Hoffman began work with the publishing department of the Evangelical Association in Cleveland, Ohio. After working in this post for 11 years, Hoffman held several pastoral posts across the Midwestern region. He served as pastor in churches in Cleveland as well as Grafton, Ohio, in the 1880s. He then transferred from Benton Harbor, Michigan, to Benton Harbor, Michigan, and the First Presbyterian Church in the mid-1890s. He then concluded his pastoral work with the First Presbyterian Church in Cabery, Illinois, from 1911-22. 3 Hoffman passed away on the 29th of September 1929, and was buried in Chicago, Illinois, and is buried in the Oak Woods Cemetery.
It is believed that Hoffman was studying the crucifixion story of Jesus in the Bible and then began to consider how God helped men be free of their mistakes by permitting Jesus to suffer on the cross. The poem Hoffman composed based on these thoughts was titled “Glory to His Name.” John Stockton, a musician and a member of Hoffman’s Church, composed the lyrics to music.
